The Gloved Experience, A Viewer’s Perspective
by Ayeola George
On October 3rd, Ocean Style Magazine hosted a charity golf event at the Half Moon Bay Resort in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Honestly guys, golf is not my thing...sorry and I can't tell you who won or what not (ok I just slapped myself, feel better???) but I can tell you this. Half Moon Bay is a magnificent hotel and if I were a golf aficionado I would say that the grounds are top class. The 19th Hole Bar serves a mean burger and even though they did not know what a "Step-Up" was the bar staff made it for me anyways. (Its Johnny Walker and Ginger Wine, BTW). I met several high profile gentlemen who shared some great jokes (and some naughty ones--c’mon those are the best).
Later at the Fashion show, BJ Coleman, the PR guy and the one who made everything just come together, seated me in the FRONT ROW ya'll. Nice. So across from me - Sheree Whitfield and Misa Hylton-Brim (say what!?%) and further up is Lady Saw and Tanya Stephens and Jaiden (who all performed "We Are The World" later on in the show). On the other side of Sheree were Lennox Lewis and Donovan Bailey. Across from them were the “who’s who” in not just Caribbean Fashion but FASHION on a whole -Freddie Leiba, Constance White....so you get the picture right? Oh and how could I forget THE Bryce Wilson was like two seats away from me.
Ok so the show is starting and I see all ladies with their legs crossed the way you see at such-and-such fashion week. I don't think I can keep my legs crossed that long. I consider myself more of a tomboy than fashion forward style vixen. And look at this 15-year-old child beside me doing it like a pro. O.K. Wait a minute where are everyone's purses??? I got this big a#s bag on my lap and not quite sure where it's supposed to be. On the floor??? Hell to the naw. Behind me? On my side? Hmmm, I'm sorry this is all new to me.
Then, its Jamaican Michael doing his thing to "Annie are you OK". A likkle moon walk, a likkle crotch grabbing and ting. And it starts off with a bang! Swimsuits. Small, tight and oh so sexy. Now I took note early that the play list was off the chain and so was the DJ (lol)! Big up to Zip Jock Bambino for seamless and well appointed music throughout the show: “Take You There” Sean Kingston, “Tip On Your Toes” Busy Signal, “Poker Face” Lady Gaga. What a Mix! Just like the fashions: animal prints, citrus yellows, gold accessories, hot shades, lots of platforms. Wait is this a Hip-Hop video???? Oh and there just had to be a girl with...attitude, attitude, attitude...as Tyra would say: "Fierce!" Some of the dresses featured bold colors like pink, red, orange and all had scallops in different variations. I loved the gorgeous silk looks and the last piece of the night, a daring number enveloped in a see-through cape. Honey, the model KNEW she was working it ! And those F* me boots did not hurt a bit! Snap, snap!
And it was over. I did not get any I-Pod or other goodies that were placed under some seats. Darn it and I just lost my shuffle! I did get a pic with Bryce-nice consolation. Everyone is mingling. There's Kingsley Cooper of Pulse Models, Chie Davis interviewing Lady Saw for Ocean Style TV, Philip Bloch , Q the hairstylist and delicious model Miguel Perdomo are posing with me for a picture.
So......even though I was a fashion show novice, I handled my handle you zi mi! I never got to meet Mr. Ocean Style himself Douglas K. Gordon who eluded me the entire evening. But, hey- there's always next year!
