Look of the Week: Bedroom Wear by Day
No matter how hard we try to look past the eighties, they refuse to fade into oblivion. While the public has seen a resurgence of 80’s trends like mohawks, shoulder padded boyfriend blazers, leggings, cropped denim jackets and even Keds, nothing tops this one- Purple Rain inspired leotards and thigh high stockings. It’s as if Apollonia 6 staged a comeback! Fashionistas from Harlem to Hollywood are stepping out and leaving both their skirts and inhibitions at home.
This baring it all statement doesn’t come as a surprise. Once Beyonce brazenly bounced in a black leotard and tights (minus the dance skirt) in her Single Ladies video, it was only a matter of time before the Lone Leotard appeared on brave bodies walking the streets. If you don’t have enough heart to rock the bold ballerina look, another what they’ve labeled ‘trashtastic’ trend to accompany it is - thigh high stockings. Young Bajan songstress Rih Rih and model Selita Ebanks were the latest long legged ladies to rock the bedroom gear by day...on and off stage, it looks like this sexed up Flashdance fad is here to stay.

While many may be quick to point fingers at the urban “streetwear” circle – this bada#s ballerina trend was previously showcased on the runway – New York Fashion Week to be exact. Designer Charlotte Ronson’s Spring / Summer 2010 show, pumped up with silver studs and pink tulle was inspired by “…a fictional 80's era Julliard dancer. The good girl with a checkered past collection ranged from cotton-candy tulip skirts to a hell-bent leather bombe. It's a kind of classical meets street," said the edgy designer.
So pull out your thigh highs, dancewear and bad gyal pout and put them all to good use for a fun time out with friends or your man. Shy Suzies can couple the Look of the Week with a cool in- trend cape or saucy sarong.
